Dodgers v Audit Commission @ Chiswick

Here's the scorecard for this 18 overs game, possibly the first ever limited overs Dodgers match in which we have declared.

Dodgers v Audit Commission
4 May 2006
20 overs

Man of The Match Votes: Adey 4, Qureshi 4, Priest 2

Match report by TQ

The Dodgers recorded a win on their first outing of the season last night, with a regulation victory over an Audit Commission side containing a customary mixture of regular players, not so regular players, and those who turned up to catch some sun on the hottest day of the year so far. Having won the toss, stand in skipper Priest chose to bat on a typically green looking early season wicket which contrary to appearance offered low bounce and little assistance to the bowlers of either side.

The opening pair of Priest and Qureshi both reached the retirement score of 25 without major alarm, aided by bowling which was as disciplined as John Prescott would be if stuck in a lift at a Secretary's Convention. However, Qureshi was notably dropped at the start of his innings by Dodgers debutant Lee whilst fielding for the opposition, wisely choosing not to reprise the role that John Hilary has made his own over the last few seasons.

The other Dodgers debutant, Dollin, played a cameo innings of 16 before being the victim of one of three good catches taken by the Audit skipper. McBarron batted down the order at 6 but unlike Flintoff the England number 6, he accumulated a number of singles and the pavilion roofing was never at risk from damage.

McBarron and Lee created a solid partnership which stabilised the innings, and helped the Dodgers to an eventual healthy total of 147 for 3, the innings was actually declared after 18 overs - very possibly a first in Dodgers evening matches - due to the sluggish Audit over rate.

The Audit innings began with an early breakthrough for Cooper who bowled one of the openers for nought, but instead of signalling a procession of wickets, Audit doggedly batted out their 20 overs without ever realistically being on course to overhaul the target, in the end reaching 84 for 4. The Dodgers performed well in the field despite shelling 3 catches, with Priest pulling off an excellent run out with a direct hit from cover point.

The bowling was generally tight if at times unspectacular. Adey's first bowl for nearly a year produced a probing spell with the bat being regularly beaten. Due to the dubious nature of the Audit scoring - which is rather concerning given the nature of their profession - the bowling figures are subject to conjecture, although Cooper, Adey, and Pope all collected a wicket each.

A full scorecard of the game will follow, as will minutes of the last AGM and at least one committee meeting, hopefully at some point during this season!

Next up for Dodgers, a game next week against a team of literally unknowns...

Humiliation

Dodgers' proud unbeaten record at Chiswick finally ended tonight when we were beaten by a team of six men... and three women from the Audit Commission.

Batting first, AC launched a severe attack from the word go. Though John Hilary fared reasonably well and took a wicket, Benn going at 8 an over and Luke going at 12 an over were particularly harshly dealt with, as were the first two overs from Adey. We dragged it back towards the end as the retirements rule again came to our rescue, but 136 was way more than anyone expected. AC had batted very well on a flat pitch, albeit assisted by our worst fielding of the season by some distance.

But, let's be fair, 137 was very gettable against only nine. Actually that's not quite right - they had ten with our loaned player. The first ball was a long hop outside off stump and Tawhid somehow chipped it low to mid-wicket where it was caught by... J Hilary, who promptly jogged off to pad up.

McBarron joined Priest and they embarked on a stand packed with competitive running. Unfortunately, they were competing with each other, which did nobody any favours. Nonetheless, Phil batted very swiftly and retired with us well up with rate. Guy showed traces of his South African side before being run out attempting an ambitious second and Neil made his 30 before also retiring.

The much-vaunted middle order again failed to deliver. Luke attempted a bold upper cut to be easily caught; Hilary tired an uncharacterisitc nurdle and was trapped in front; and Benn's rather more characteristic nurdle was caught off a leading edge. In between Cooper had been comprehensively bowled, and with the Cat's departure it was up to Adey and the returned McBarron with 18 needed off two. Phil cut a dashing figure in C&A's finest having bizarrely got changed, but was soon run out.

12 off the last with Priest at the wicket. A two and a one made it nine off four, then Adey launched a sensational slog over mid-wicket to make it five off three. A dot, then all over as John was bowled in the gloom. As last week, the game ended on a sour note with some totally unneccessary bad sportsmanship from some members of the opposition.

AC thoroughly deserved to win this, having batted really well against a lack-lustre Dodgers side that had fielded abysmally. We should still have won, but the batting just didn't get its act together.

DODGERS BACK TO WINNING WAYS (NARROWLY)

By our guest correspondent Mr McBarron

Dodgers got back on the winning trail last night with a 7 run victory over Audit Commission. AC managed to raise only 8 players but were bolstered by the guesting Barry Gigg of Superstars. Winning the toss at the new venue for us of Battersea Park, Capt Priest decided to make use of a sporting deck against bowling of variable quality. Dodgers managed 142 in their 20 overs with retired 30s from Priest and McB (the former rapid and fluent with all runs in boundaries, the latter stodgier). A few beefy blows from Luke and Cav who both reached double figures and
extras accounted for the other principal contributions. ACs batting was superior to their bowling and all their batters could play a bit at least. Gigg survived a ferocious barrage from Cav and rode his luck to score quickly before retiring. With his replacements also scoring quickly, we were fortunate that the other AC opener seemed oblivious of the required rate of more than 7 an over and nurdled it around making 28 in 19 overs! 42 were required of the last 4 overs, 21 off the last 2 and 15 of the final over. Death bowlers Luke and McB with a spread
field doing just enough to see Dodgers home. Pick of our bowlers was new boy Matt Southwell with 4 accurate overs for 17. Otherwise, the bowling and fielding performance can only be described as fair, although Cav was unfortunate to see some rapid edges of catchable height disappear predictably to the boundary.

Good luck to those playing against the Scum next week!

DODGERS V AUDIT COMMISSION

CHISWICK
DODGERS won by 44 RUNS
Dodgers: 165 -2 20 Overs (McBarron 33 retd; Jacobs 32 retd; Cooper 32 retd.)
Audit Comm. 103 -5 20 Overs (Benn - 2.0.6.2 Streatfeild - 4.1.10.1)
Match Report: Kim Matthews

Dodgers having won the toss elected to bat. Capt. Priest agreed to batsmen retiring at 30 (some of us have never started!!). The game was played on a warm May evening with no cloud and only the roar of the soon to be departed Concorde to disturb us. The wicket was good if a little unpredictable. Audit Commission promised 9 turned up with 7 and were bolstered by the addition of Qureshi’s mate Kavanagh (desperate for a quality game!!). During Dodgers innings they were offered 2 fielders but would take only 1. Dodgers took full advantage and notched up 165 in their 20 overs. Dodgers ran out easy victors as the Audit batsmen , restricted by some excellent bowling and a full fielding side, were never up with the run rate and could only manage 103 in reply.

Mcbarron and Priest took full advantage of some loose bowling and plundered 64 from 8 overs before Priest was caught and bowled of a slower ball from Emery. Mcbarron retired shortly after having scored an entirely out of character quick fire 33. Jacobs (on his return to Dodgers colours from exile in Bristol) and Lucky Cooper then matched each other run for run pushing the score on to 130 before, within a few balls of each other, both retired on 32. Roper was the only other Dodger out; stumped for 7 attempting a big hit off Irwin.

Tight opening bowling from Cousins and Streatfeild (who had opener Taylor excellently caught by Priest at short extra cover, in his first over) effectively won the game for Dodgers. They restricted Audit to 25 in the first 8 overs and ensured that the remaining Dodger’s bowlers could afford to be a bit more generous without danger of recrimination in the bar afterwards. Qureshi took full advantage of this opportunity and conceded 30 off 4. Whilst Benn spurned it and took 2 for 6 from his 2. The only defiance was offered by Fisher who retired on 31 and Sully bowled Benn for 20.

Man of the match was Chris Jacobs for his well struck 32 (in his first game for 2 years) and his entertaining fielding. His sprint round the boundary, stop with his foot, and throw over his shoulder for 4, was particularly entertaining. (In retrospect I think I should have given my vote to Will Streatfeild!)

We haven’t played Audit before. They were a good bunch and should we have the opportunity I recommend a future fixture at Battersea Park (not least for the chance of sampling a new pub). Dodgers had to fend off some fiery bowling from Qureshi’s mate Kavanagh (who had Cooper dropped 3 times) who also appeared, at least by my standards, to be able to bat; so if we can get him to play for us on occasion I suggest we accept with alacrity.

Man of the Match: Chris Jacobs
