Dodgers won by 8 wickets

20 May 2004

This is getting boring...

In a game more reminiscent of last summer Dodgers last night triumphed over a mercurial ORR side in some comfort, despite conceding 131 in the field. Three wickets for Luke, retired 30s for Taylor and McBarron, and a top score from Mr Extras were the main contributions. The bandwagon rolls on to Buckhurst Hill on Sunday.

Dodgers v ORR

CSSG Chiswick
Tuesday 8th July 2003
ORR won by 6 wickets

Dodgers 105 - 5, 20 overs (McBarron - 40 not out, Leach - 24)
ORR 106 - 4, 17.4 overs (McBarron 2-23, Streatfeild 1-22)

Weather - Humid

On a very muggy July evening Dodgers won the toss and elected to bat. Carr decided that 40 would be the retirement age for the evening, a decision that would come to haunt the captain, who in hindsight might have preferred to raise it to 50. Dodgers were reduced to nine men and without Hilary and Roper.

McBarron and Carr took to the field, with McBarron hitting a four off the first delivery, but then faced a good opening spell by the opening ORR bowlers. The score ticked along well, until Carr fell to a good delivery (Warrens last ball of his spell). Benn came to the crease hoping to build a partnership with the ever - steady McBarron, but fell to an unfortunate decision caught behind. Cooper (who had a very nasty ball to his chest) and Birch failed to get going, and Streatfeild came in at number six, after 10 overs with 46 on the board. Worried that Dodgers might not face all 20 overs, he batted himself in, giving support to McBarron who was nearing his retirement score of 40. ORR had some tight bowling and McBarron retired on 40. Doyle out first ball and Leach came to the crease to make an impressive 24 in the last four overs. ORR could have had the final pair run out on a number of occasions, due to some terrible running between the wickets. Dodgers finished on 105 for 5.

With only nine men Dodgers had to borrow two fielders from ORR, and after a lengthy half time changeover the ORR batsmen finally arrived at the crease. Benn and Streatfeild opened the bowling, with the ORR openers making a quick start. Streatfeild had opener Warren caught for 5, caught by McBarron. Cooper and Leach continued with Cooper having a great spell, with a maiden (the only one of the match) and a run out, which was quite impressive considering his earlier injury. Mason, the other ORR opener had a good innings, running well between the wickets and was retired for 40. McBarron joined the attack taking two wickets, but it seemed the ORR batting attack was too strong. ORR were helped by quick running between the wickets and the absence of Hilary and Roper, who were both missed. ORR won by 6 wickets with three over to spare.

DODGERS VS ORR

CHISWICK
TUESDAY 16 JULY 6PM
20 OVER GAME

RESULT: DODGERS 102-5 BEAT ORR 54 ALL OUT BY 48 RUNS

REPORT

Dodgers easily won a low scoring game on a slow low pitch mainly due to a decent knock by Mc BARRON (34) and some excellent bowling (again) by BENN (3-19), well backed up by LEACH (3-13) and POPE (2-5)

CARR won the toss and DODGERS batted. Mc BARRON and WESTHEAD opened the batting. Mc BARRON was not at his best (but lets face it his less than best is best than manys best) but ground out a score. WESTHEAD hit one sublime pull but was frustrated at not being able to score for well-hit shots through the off-side that found fielders. In the 9th over after a partnership of 41 WESTHEAD departed when having made 11 to Mc Barrons 21, trying to force the pace, he was run out (not for the first time this season) after having been sent back by Mc BARRON. PRIEST next in was not in his usual form and departed to a catch for 6. COOPER hit one four before departing for 12. CARR was rusty initially but had a late spurt with one glorious straight drive for 4 which went like a rocket. If only he could hit it so hard all the time when he hits it hard my it stays hit! Mc BARRON was out for 34 with the score at 3-67 in the 15TH over. DODGERS finally totalled 102-5 off the 20 overs with CARR 12 not out and HILARY 6 not out. There were a total of 17 extras of which 15 wides. The going had been tough for the batsmen throughout the innings. Would 102 be enough?

When ORR batted it soon became clear that 102 was more than enough. Wickets fell steadily from the off with BENN bowling WARING for a duck and OMAR for one. SIMON bowled EVANS for 4. With the opening bowlers off ORR might have thought they would have some respite but all the other bowlers quickly got in the wickets too. LEACH was particularly impressive with 3-9 off 3 , HAWTIN took 1-4 off 2 and POPE took 2-5 off 2. POPE really has been a revelation this season. Only HILARY remained wicketless but with only a miserly 3 runs off his 3 overs he made a big contribution. For ORR only GILES with 26 got going. ORR were all out after 18 overs and never in the game.

Toss ?
Result: Dodgers won by 29 runs
Start 17:40
Finish: in near darkness

Reporter Nick Sandamas

Well the Dodgers continued their good run of late with a comfortable win over ORR by 29 runs in a game where the opposition were struggling to keep up with the run rate.

The Dodgers took to the crease first with Bultitude and Priest the first 2 batsman and they started like a house on fire with them punishing every poor ball bowled to them, extras also increasing the total.

After 12 overs the Dodgers raced to 126 without loss at almost 11 an over. Bultitude and Priest both completed their 50s, so they retired giving McBarron and Captain Carr a chance in the middle, but McBarron was first man out having scored 7 being bowled by Bulman (McBarron must have been thinking of Yorkshire v Surrey). Joy on the faces of ORR, as they finally managed to take a wicket even though it took nearly 14 overs to achieve it. 126 for 1.

Number 5 John Cooper came out onto the middle to partner Carr who was still unbeaten. Cooper didn't last long as in the 16th over was bowled by Bryant for 2. 143 for 2, so in came Mr (never scored a run) Sandamas. Sandamas looked nervous as he was chasing that first ever run in a Dodgers shirt, but alas it did come after 4 balls (and the small crowd were cheering). That was Sandamas's only run as he was caught off a superb catch by Ahmed off the bowling of Lake. 151 for 3 with 2 overs remaining. Carr (15 n/o) and Rolls (3 n/o) took the score up to 155 for 3 leaving the visitors 156 to win off 20 overs at nearly 8 an over.

So now the turn round. The Dodgers took to the field with Benn and Adey opening the bowling. ORR needed to score fast. However the breakthrough came in only the 3rd over with Benn taking the wicket of Ahmed LBW for 2.(where's the red line?, Simon Hughes where are you). In the very next over Couch was bowled by the so called spin of Adey for 1 and the score was 9 for 2. The Dodgers kept the bowling very tight with the score moving slowly to 35 for 2 off 7 overs still requiring another 122 off 13 for victory with 8 wickets left. In Adey's last over he took the wicket of Bulman for 22, a good stumping by the Cat (Matthews) 36 for 3. With Adey and Benn now bowled out, in came Pope & Cooper. Cooper didn't take a wicket in his 4 overs but had good figures of 0 for 20. The score had moved on to 79 for 3 when Pope took the dangerous Bryant for 41 caught by Cooper. 79 for 4 off 14 overs.

Rolls and Sandamas took over the bowling for the remaining 4 overs. 1 more wicket fell in almost fading light. Lake stumped by McBarron for 5 (where was Kim?) in the very last ball of the match.

So ORR finished on 126 for 5 to lose by 29 runs. Joyce retired on 23.

So a good way to end August.

DODGERS v OFFICE OF THE RAIL REGULATOR
Tuesday 27 July 1999
20 overs
Chiswick

Dodgers batted first by virtue of only having 9 players at the start

DODGERS: 123 for 2 (Priest retired 50, McBarron 40, Rose 2-18)
ORR: 118 for 4 (Ringer retired 53, Rose 30 not out, Hilary 1-13, Crawford 1-13)

DODGERS WON BY 5 RUNS

DODGERS MAN OF THE MATCH: Neil Priest

Our fourth annual match against ORR turned out to be the closest so far and one of the best games this season - despite ORR no longer having the services of Meneer and Murphy to call upon.

We batted first and John Adey promised us that the bowling would be a buffet of lollipops - ha! (there's a quote of the week in there somewhere but I can't quite put my finger on it). ORR's recent new entrants include some very useful cricketers and this year their were only one bowler light. Despite some good line and length swing bowling on a pitch with variable bounce we got off to a solid if slow start, Priest and McBarron eventually putting on 101 for the first wicket before Phil was bowled off his pads by Rose and Priest retired having made 50 (at last!). Westhead will want to forget his first ball which he chipped straight back to Rose but some speedy running from Benn and big swings from Crawford (a couple of which he actually connected with!) took us to a good total of 123.

Henry opened the bowling and quickly ripped out the middle stump of one of the ORR openers. Unfortunately this only served to bring Ringer (surely not his real name...?) to the wicket who proceeded to smash our bowling to all parts of the county before retiring with a quickfire 53. Fielding and Rose continued the battering and we were lucky to hold on to win by 5 runs - mainly due to four very tight overs from Crawford at the death. Some of the other bowlers will wish to forget their figures so I've included them for all to see! Generally, we dropped too many catches (although none were easy - Priest 2, Brown, Roper and Westhead 1 each) and bowled to short - we'll need to be better against BSI next week...

All in all though, the kind of game that makes the trip to Chiswick worth it.

DODGERS LOSE BY 1 WICKET

Dodgers lost the toss and batted.

Dodgers man of the match - John ("I'm fucking knackered") Carr

In the equivalent fixture last year we lost by 10 wickets, so only losing by 1 was a vast improvement. The result was still a major disappointment because we really should have won.

We batted first and made a slow start. Out of form Priest was bowled when he managed to york himself going down the wicket to crappy donkey drop bowler Brennan. Clarkson still basking in the glory of his early season 70 is now back to his usual technically devoid form playing no stroke to several offside deliveries. He was out to the excellent Chaudhry after a slanging match with McBarron over running between the wickets. Thank God I didn't have to give him out lbw. Our score became respectable due to good innings by McBarron, Carr and Westhead. Dodgers man of the match Carr played especially well despite running out of breath towards the end (give up the fags and booze John).

Once again we couldn’t manage to dismiss Peter Murphy (who plays for Woking in the Surrey League). He was dropped a few times, including twice by Guy Westhead, the first was quite easy, the second a skier on the boundary which hurt his hand (teach him to drop the first one !). In the end we simply tried to get the rest of their team out before Murphy could get the runs. Despite some good accurate bowling from McBarron at the end we just failed to win.

My stint as Captain is now over (thank God you cry !) and Phil McB is in charge for the next game on 28 July (the 23 July fixture against DNS was cancelled ‘cause the arseholes forgot to book a pitch). For those of you who don’t know, we also lost the 8 July fixture due to rain.

Coming events

Pissed Dodgers Day - venue: the Great British Beer Festival at Olympia, Friday 8th August all afternoon (contact McB for details).

Another chance to spot a pissed Dodger is in the Royal Oak on 6th August. This is the last day before the Oak closes for several weeks for refurbishment. Sadly, fellow Dodger, landlord Ian Wadhams and his wonderful partner Val (does this qualify me for a free pint ?) will not be returning when the pub reopens. So all please come along to say farewell and to drink the place dry!

Quote of the week: "I have a bat and I know how to use it" - Sian Brown scaring the Royal Oak Friday night crowd shitless.
