Dodgers v Nomura

Dodgers 140 (Lee 29*, Dollin 26*, Radcliffe 21) beat Nomura 133 (Lowe 4-0-28-2, Cousins 4-0-12-1) by 7 runs

Match report by Neil Priest

"Good win for Dodgers last night against investment bankers Nomura. Dodgers posted 141 after some good batting from Dollin, Radcliffe and Lee (PS). Nomura ended up around 10 short after fine opening spells from Cousins and Paterson. Lowe chipped in with a couple of wickets and Lee (PS) and Cousins (R) bowled a tight last couple of overs to seal the win. Champagne moment came when Guy van der Westhead made a welcome return to the side with a direct hit run out from mid-on. WG Grace moments provided by the opposition Captain who refused to accept an LBW decision against him and carried on batting and later told the umpire he was "in" when run out by about a yard. Scorecard to follow idc."

Dodgers v Corinthians

Chiswick
6pm
Weather: Fair

Corinthians 68 (Lowe 5 for 8) lost to Dodgers - full details to come

Man of the Match: Lowe - 10, Lee (P-PS) - 1

Match Report by Peter Lee

A rare break in the late July storms saw the Dodgers taking on Belair Corinthians, eager to extract revenge for the comprehensive stuffing inflicted upon them earlier in the season.  Captain Priest, having [won/lost] the toss [elected] to field first, giving Corinthians first use of what looked like a placid wicket and Dodgers first use of an outfield strewn with its usual late-season helpings of goose droppings.

Lowe was given choice of ends and, having been treated for shock, swiftly nominated the top end in order to maximise his raw pace.  The first ball whistled down at a terrifying 40 miles an hour and was dispatched disdainfully for four.  After the second ball nearly suffered the same fate, Lowe apologised and stated that “he hadn’t bowled fast for weeks”.  After briefly wondering in which parallel universe Lowe had ever bowled fast, assorted Dodgers suggested he perhaps aimed for accuracy instead.

The rest, as they say, is history.  Corinthians batsmen, clearly influenced by the David Koresh-eque Messiah figure that is Mike Dollin, fell over each other to perish off his bowling.  Like depressed lemmings who, following a particularly bad day at the office, come home to find the wife in bed with the octogenarian next-door neighbour, they seemed only to eager to end it as swiftly as possible.    Barker bagged the first quack quack, dollying a simple c&b chance, swiftly followed by Dubey and Mendelsohn for similarly shaped blobs.  Dollin briefly detained the scorers and tested late arrival Fox with one swirling chance before generously offering him to chance for redemption a few balls later which he gobbled up faster than a hungry cricketer confronted by a plate of tea-time scones.  In between the Lowe-inspired carnage, Cooper bowled an excellent spell and was rewarded with the wicket of Thompson, snaffled by specialist short extra cover Westhead (OBE).

Into Lowe’s last over and the tension rose with the fiver-for within touching distance.  The Corinthian batsmen seemed determined to see him off but with three balls left, he couldn’t resist a swipe which flew straight to Lee at mid-off.  Cue wild celebrations.  No Dodger has ever taken six-for and neither could Lowe as Gant blocked solidly .  Still, 4-1-8-5 was the second best-ever analysis for a Dodger and had firmly placed the home side in control.

The follow up bowling ensured that the boot remained firmly on the throat, Hilary was somewhat profligate, conceding an entire run off his four overs.  Fox probed away and picked a wicket from an excellent Marr catch.  A late flurry off Lee and McBarron made the score somewhat more respectable but left the Dodgers only needing 3 1/2 an over.

Nothing is ever easy for Dodgers though.  Hattea continued his excellent form with an unbeaten 25 but at the other end, there was a wobble as Marr, Priest and Westhead departed for low scores.  At 23-3 Corinthians were considering that the impossible could happen.  However, Hattea’s knock pushed the score along further and then a solid partnership, combining McBarron’s pragmatic nurdles and Lee’s agricultural whacks, rapidly closed things out.  A comfortable win was completed with 3.2 overs left by 7 wickets.  Over Lowe’s excellent post-match jugs, the Dodgers reflected on one of the all-time great bowling spells and some consistently strong fielding and catching.  MoM was a predictable landslide for Dodgers very own Phil Defreitas.

Dodgers v Carib Beer XI

Regent's Park
6pm
20 overs
Weather: Dry, then torrential rain, then wet

Dodgers 161 for 4 (Radcliffe 28*, Hatteea 27*, Qureshi 27*, Taylor 25*) beat Carib XI 110 for 6 by 51 runs

Man of the Match: Carr - 4, Taylor - 4, Lowe - 1, Hatteea - 1, Cooper R - 1

A solid victory set up by five (count 'em!) retired not outs from a strong Dodgers batting line-up. Unfortunately the match was spoiled by a torrential downpour minutes into the Carib innings which saw the play being moved to the adjacent artificial pitch. The umpire apologised to the Cat for giving him run out when clearly he was in!

Sports Day 2009

11am
Chiswick
Dry and sunny then very wet

Codgers (Matthews, Taylor, Lee PS, Radcliffe, Dollin and Keeka) reached the semi-final before being beaten by Superstars but had two very good wins in the qualifying group. Dodgers' (Priest, Hilary, Fox, Cooper J, Paterson, Cousins) qualifying group was reduced to a sudden-death knockout after one of the teams failed to show up. Dodgers' semi-final against Souperstars was tight until the last over.

The Final between Dodgers and Superstars was a tight affair but Dodgers did very well to restrict Superstars to only 61. The key wicket of Gundry came in the second over off Cooper, a top-edged skier which was well snaffled by Hilary on the short legside boundary.

Dodgers started the chase in tremendous fashion with Priest hitting Taylor for successive sixes. Unfortunately a communication breakdown led to Priest being run out the next ball. Fox in at 3 hit a few lusty blows before he too was run out in mysterious circumstances. Cooper hit Perry for successive fours before being clean bowled 3 balls later. With twenty-odd required off the last two overs it was down to Hilary and Paterson to do the business. Abigail bowled the penultimate over which included 3 wides (which at 4 runs a piece was quite significant). So it came down to Gundry bowling the final over with only 6 runs required. With an aggressive tight line he was hard to hit. However a slack ball was called wide (to great protests). Two balls later another, even wider, delivery was not called wide. A scrambled single off the last ball meant that it finished in a tie. With no provision in the rule book for such a thing, there was no further action and the result was indeed confirmed as a tie.

Dodgers v Motley Crew

"The horror!"

Chiswick
6pm
20 overs
Retire at 25
Weather: Hot and sunny then overcast

Man of the Match: Marr - 4, McBarron - 4, Cousins - 2, Carr - 1

Match Report [by various]

On a fine balmy (barmy?) Chiswick evening the Dodgers came unstuck against a bunch of beefy Safs. We were a bowler or two light and they had 5 or 6 players who hit everything aerial which gave real value from long boundaries and slow outfields. We also fielded very poorly to compound things.

Chasing a high total we forfeited the top order to early slogging and a low ball (Pete Lee-RAIL). We were 17-4 after 7 overs at one point. We then rallied to avoid our worst ever score (a lowly 50 Dodgers stats fans). But they had a lot of bowling options including a leg break bowler who turned it square and got the ball to lift horribly. With better catching we might have been all out for less than 50.

Dodgers v Weekenders

Chiswick
3pm
Timed game
Weather: Dry, overcast

Dodgers 171 for 8 (Radcliffe 40 off 66, McBarron 33 off 37, Taylor 28 off 46, Cooper 15* off 8) drew with Weekenders 170 for 2 (Cousins 17-1-74-2, Lowe 8-0-47-0)

Man of the Match: Cousins - 7, Radcliffe - 3

Match report by Peter Lee

Nine Weekenders travelled to Chiswick for an encounter with the Dodgers at the sixties architectural treasure trove that is the civil service sports ground. With five debutantes, skipper Jeyaratnam opted for safety first by inviting Dodgers to have first use. A stout opening stand of 65 by occasional Weekenders Taylor and Radcliffe saw off the fiery opening stints of Dibley and new boy Orwell. Erasmus then struck in his first over before both Lee (no relation) and Radcliffe fell to grubbers. Haseem picked up his second wicket with a peach, bracketed by a pair of run-outs including a direct hit from Lee. De Silva spun some sharp leg breaks to pick off a couple more, including the determined McBarron. Some quick running and late hitting saw Dodgers finish on a challenging 171 – 8.

Weekenders kicked off the chase with a solid stand of 99 for the first wicket. When Lee was dismissed for 36, having withstood a barrage of sledging, the run-rate was a very gettable 5.5 an over but momentum stalled a little as Hogben ran out of steam and the Dodgers bowling tightened up. Cousins in particular tied up one end with a mammoth 17 over spell. When Hogben finally fell for a magnificent 60, 46 were needed off five overs. Some sharp running and beefy hitting from De Silva, including a mammoth six, got the equation down to 12 off the last over but the valiant chase fell two short, and one short of a remarkable second consecutive tie. A sporting draw was a fair result in a cracking game played with great spirit by two well-matched sides.

Champagne moment: Erasmus's Austin Powers-esque cry of "yeah baby!" as De Silva's huge hit sailed into nearby gardens.

Dodgers v LSE Staff

LSE Ground, Berrylands

Toss agreed: Dodgers batted first.

Dodgers 187 for 7 (McBarron 46 - 65 balls, Priest 32 - 39 balls, Hatteea 31, Cooper J 24*) lost to LSE Staff 188 for 6 (Hatteea 7-0-41-2, Cooper J 4-0-16-1, Fox 7-1-34-1) by 4 wickets

MoM: Cooper J - 5, Hatteea - 4, McBarron - 1

Match Report

A nearly complete Dodgers side comprising 8 stalwarts in need of an afternoon off and 2 borrowed Superstars (thanks Colin and Mark) turned out on for the annual match against the LSE's Staff team at an overcast Berrylands.

Batting first, Dodgers openers McB and Lee the Younger made steady progress before the latter was bowled for 15. Williams in his first ever start for the Dodgers could only add 6. However, a partnership of 54 for the 3rd wicket between McBarron and Priest saw a recovery. The unlucky Davey was run out without facing a ball to bring in Hatteea for a swift 31. Cooper hit an unbeaten 24 including some lusty blows to take the final total on to 187.

It was always going to be a hard total to defend...

Selected highlights of the Dodgers bowling were:

- Appleton walking to Cooper's bowling when only The Cat appealed.
- Priest setting an 8-0 legside field to Pope for a few balls.

Dodgers v KAI Dragons

Chiswick
6pm
20 overs

KAI Dragons 134 for 7 (Cooper R 4-2-18-2) bt Dodgers 82 all out (Hilary 16) by 52 runs

Mini-match report by The Cat:

"We were soundly stuffed. They got 135ish with 4 players retiring on 25 and we got 90ish all out in the 17th over - highest score 16!! (and I pulled my hamstring whilst attempting, unsuccessfully, to avoid being run out.) We also forgot we were playing away on Tuesday and locked all the kit in the lockers and then Pete Lee left the keys in his kit at home and went on holiday!! Ah well it looks like it's going to be one of those seasons."

Dodgers v Superstars

Chiswick
6pm
20 overs
No retirement rule

Dodgers 109 for 6 (Priest 18, Marr 14) lost to Superstars 110 for 3 (Cousins 4-0-6-0, McBarron 2-0-11-1) by 7 wickets

Scorecard below

A bright blustery evening at Chiswick saw this season's first encounter with Superstars unfold on Tuesday evening. Priest, substituting for the late-to-arrive Carr, won the toss and elected to bat. Matt Taylor accompanied Neil to the crease to face opening bowlers Gundry and Mountain. It was fairly slow going due to some very tight stuff from Gundry but it was Mountain who took the first wicket, that of Taylor who took his eye off the ball and was clean bowled much to his very vocal chagrin. Having already been dropped behind in the third over, Matt was quite fortunate. Damian Radcliffe was next in and took a while to get settled, facing 9 balls before getting off the mark. Meanwhile Priest was dropped by Gigg on the boundary. Once settled, Damian played some fine strokes including two fours before Conway (on for Mountain) had him caught at square leg. In contrast, number four batsman Russ Marr got off to a flying start with 8 off 3 balls. He progressed steadily and appeared to be set for a big score when he was caught behind by Walker off Mike Taylor (on for Gundry who finished with a fine 4-1-9-0). Two minutes later Neil Priest was caught by Conway, again off Taylor for 18. Neil had batted for 45 minutes but faced only 23 balls! With Dodgers on 56 for 4 off 13 overs it was time to step up a gear. Phil McBarron and John Carr put on 25 for the 5th wicket in 12 minutes with both scoring at around a run a ball. Phil was caught and bowled by the returning Mountain which brought in Peter Lee. Bringing a welcome do-or-die spirit, Peter immediately launched into it but his aggression brought his downfall attempting to launch a mighty blow over long off he instead holed out to a fine catch. Step up John Hilary for a bit more of the same... and then some. A quickfire 13 of ten balls not only saw Dodgers to an acceptable total of 109 but also threatened to bring about the untimely demise of our beloved captain. JC survived and kept his part of the bargain in finishing on 9 off 9 balls.

Gaught and Conway opened the batting for Superstars with Cousins and Cooper taking bowling honours for Dodgers. Simon caused all kinds of problems at the one end and kept a very tight ship whilst Cooper at the other end was simply experiencing all kinds of problems, exacerbated by the very blustery conditions. The scoreboard ticked over steadily and Cooper was replaced by Fox in the 8th over. Simon Cousins meanwhile ended with splendid figures of 4-1-6-0 and was replaced by John Hilary. JH seemed to be getting some fine swing and was rewarded with the wicket of Matt Conway courtesy of a McBarron catch. Cooper dropped a steepling catch from a typical big hit by Gaught off Fox. Gaught made his fifty but was out soon after to a catch by Marr off the returning Cooper. Evison departed for a duck off McBarron to a "slip" catch by Priest. It was left to Gigg to score the winning run off Priest.

Dodgers v Ministry of Justice

Dodgers (125 for 3, Priest 25*, Lee 27*) lost to MoJ (126 for 2, Fox 4-0-23-1, McBarron 1-0-7-1) by 8 wkts.

Match report

The first match of the season took place on a typically dark and gloomy early May night at the Civil Service Sports Ground, Chiswick. Also, running to form, we started 20 minutes late.

JC won the toss and elected to bat on the basis that it would be marginally preferable to field rather than bat when it got really dark later on. The decision looked to be a good one as openers Neil Priest and new recruit Rob Cooper (from TQ's other team) steadily put on runs before Rob (13) was bowled by Whalley.

Our second new recruit of the night, Pete Lee (no relation), stepped up and after a few sighters proceeded to smack it everywhere including three fours in four balls at one point. The retire-at-25 rule saw Pete depart undefeated on 27 minutes after Neil had also notched up another red-inker on 25.

This meant two new batsmen in the form of Phil McBarron (20*) and Guy Westhead (15). Fortunately this didn't disrupt the pace of the innings as they both scored at around a run ball before Guy was bowled by the returning Whalley, bring in John Carr.

JC (5) was given out in dubious circumstances caught behind to leave Rob Fox to come in for his obligatory not out (4*).

The Dodgers total was 125.

Following the change around John Cooper opened the bowling and found the edge a couple of times but found no luck. Rob Fox opened at the other end* and eventually had opener Bigham out caught and bowled for 21. The other three of the MoJ top four (Smith, Hutchison and Cason) bats would all go on to retired 25's.

Change bowlers Will Streatfeild and Rob Cooper had varying success. Will's pace was undenied but his line was wayward and a few wides at 2 runs a piece were clocked up. Rob Cooper also showed pace and swing and was unlucky not to get a wicket.

5th change David Pope was severely attacked and went for 28 of only 2 overs which left Dodgers under a bit of pressure. Streatfeild returned for a second spell and reduced his pace and his bowling improved a great deal. McBarron bowled at the death and was immediately rewarded with a wicket courtesy of a skier which was caught by John Cooper at cover.

MoJ reached their required total of 126 with two overs to spare and won by 8 wickets.
